Sample of SOP for Indian students who are looking forward to study abroad
The implications of Computer Science (CS) for the modern world are constantly expanding, making it an intriguing subject. Growing up during the 2000s, I witnessed the internet boom and mobile phones get smaller, smarter and computers evolve. I would often find myself wondering about the contents of a device responsible for the magic and more often than not, open them up to the dismay of my parents. It was therefore a surprise to no one when I decided to pursue my undergraduate education in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). I have been a consistent student throughout my academic career. I completed my high school education with an 8.8 CGPA and then my higher secondary schooling with 87.6 % in 2016. In 2021, I graduated with a B. Tech degree in ECE with a CGPA of 6.43 from Sri Vasavi Engineering College. My wish for myself has been to make a successful career out of my love for computers. And to do that, I need to pursue a Master’s degree in the same, to build my knowledge and to be able to land good positions in prestigious IT firms.
The United States of America has been at the helm of the latest technological advances. CS departments in prestigious institutions in the USA have established relationships with IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and other Silicon Valley companies. These features of American CS departments have greatly contributed to my interest in studying there. The courses offered by the Computer Science program at the Colorado School of Mines will help me gain extensive technical and managerial knowledge required to achieve my professional goals. My further research helped me realize the diversity of student’s body that will open my mind to new ideas and new ways of doing things and utilizes experimental learning methods such as seminars, debate boards, along with exceptional internship opportunities, which helps me grow holistically. I am very confident that I’ll meet those expectations as I am well aware of the high standards set by the University.
I attended a number of workshops as an undergraduate to slake my appetite for information about everything technological. I’ve worked on a few highly fascinating and rewarding study fields as a result of participating in a number of group initiatives. Under the direction of my lecturer, I worked on my personal project to create a tool that digitally analyses fuel levels and estimates how far a bike can travel. This project garnered a lot of positive feedback when it was exhibited at our college’s project expo.
I worked on my senior project with three other students and took the initiative to manage the team, which helped me hone my presentational and leadership abilities. In addition, I have published my research paper in ICEAT of my senior project titled “Transform based strategy to mitigate pilot contamination.” My participation in extracurricular activities and organizing annual college fests helped me develop my leadership skills. Being elected as a head of the student union gave me a great opportunity to lead a huge team where I have learned the virtues of leadership, teamwork, friendship and eventually have helped me grow as a person.
My college experience coincided with the COVID pandemic and I along with my batch-mates missed out on several opportunities as a result. I also accumulated some backlogs due to many related reasonsand this reflected in my CGPA. I had several health complications due to sinus and dust allergy. I unfortunately also went through an accident during second year’s 1st semester. But I believe I bounced back stronger than ever. I went on to apply to India’s most prestigious research center, Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), in an effort to learn more about real-world research environments and to improve my education. Out of thousands of applicants, I was one of the few students chosen as an intern. As we built and implemented “Watchdog timer in ATM Machine” using VHDL algorithms, I gained lessons and insights about arriving at solutions to difficult problems.
Following my undergrad, I was hired by TATA Consultancy Services as an Associate Software Engineer, where I received virtual training for a month due to the pandemic. It was the period of time that altered my experience here and my perspective about the software industry and stoked my desire to master new technologies at my own pace. I was assigned to a Honeywell project in which I served as a Test Engineer to test various website components as well as test cases related to usability, navigation buttons, and dashboards. Using Linux fundamental commands, Python, and MySQL, I learned greatly. Besides this, I also learnt to effectively use the automation testing tool known as Selenium Web Driver.
I wish to keep learning, exploring technology and utilize my knowledge and passion to make the society a better place to live. I envision a future where I can set up my own business in my home country India. Since my country is quickly advancing in the IT sector, I am excited to contribute to this process. I ultimately wish to be a developer of creative gadgets and engineer software products. The preparation for which needs to begin now, and The Colorado School of Mines, as I stated earlier, is the best address for this purpose.I am honored to get an opportunity to express myself, and I look forward to an enriching experience as a part of the incoming batch of Fall 2023.
