SOP sample for Aerospace Engineering
Statement of Purpose
Name: ……………………………………..
Course: MS in Aerospace Engineering
All things that flew caught my fancy in my childhood. I would watch birds soaring up in the sky. I would make paper airplanes and parachutes from paper or cloth and enjoy watching these things floating in the air. Later on, my father gave me a small balsa airplane kit powered by a tiny petrol engine. It flew and along with it my ambition to work in the aerospace sector. Today, I am at the threshold of a career that I hope to jumpstart with advanced training in aerospace engineering.
What I wish to study and why this program
I have a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Sathyabama University. My major subjects were engineering mechanics, avionics, aircraft structures, aerodynamics, aircraft design and aerospace propulsion. While the graduate level course did give me a strong grounding in these topics, I feel that I must study still more and attain higher levels of knowledge before I pursue a career in aerospace or avionics. I wish to study each of these topics in greater detail and for this, the proposed course I plan to take up is ideal. It includes these vital topics and goes into greater depth. I will acquire knowledge and skills that will make me industry ready.
Why this university and this country
Aerospace engineering is a specialized area of study, not usually taught in most universities. I evaluated similar courses before finally deciding on this university. It has the best faculty, lab facilities, connection with industry professionals and excellent research as well as study facilities. I will get theoretical training as well as hands-on experience, which I consider crucial for work in aerospace.
The USA, in my opinion, is a world leader in avionics and aerospace. I still wonder at its achievement of putting the first man on the Moon. The US can justifiably take pride in being the country where the most highly advanced surveillance and military level aircrafts have been developed using stealth technologies. It is home to Boeing that flies millions around the world. The US inspires and motivates students like me to innovate, think out of the box and to reach for the skies.
Classes/projects
I designed and fabricated a Tricopter based on FDM technology as part of my study project. The tricoper I designed and built was, in effect a type of helicopter with multiple propulsion motors and a servo controller to control direction, take off, landing and speed. It was designed as an advancement of drones currently available. The application areas are delivery of medical supplies to remote areas, defence, security and photography.
As part of my studies I became an intern at Bangalore Aircraft Industries in Bangalore where I learnt the practical aspects of stress analysis, materials testing and structural testing of components used in aircrafts and sub-assemblies.
I took part in the National Students’ Space Challenge event organized by IIT Kharagpur in 2018 and have a certificate. I also have a certificate from the Institution of Engineers, Sathyabhama University for having successfully completed a short term course on avionics.
Leadership/community experience
During my college days and even today I am an active cricketer and a member of our local aero club. I play cricket and have captained my teams to take part in district and State-level championships.
I love to volunteer for social causes and I have won an award for organizing a village cleaning program. I have also volunteered for the National Service Scheme and received commendation for my enthusiastic participation as well as for motivating others.
Values I bring to the institution
I am focused and committed to my path. However, I am also gregarious and make friends easily, getting well along with my team mates in college. I believe in helping others to help myself, even as I pursue my goal. I bring these values with me and I am sure I will do well at studies in this institution which will be my “alma-mater” for the next couple of years. Just as it is the duty of a son to do something for his mother, I hope to do something for my alma mater in future.
Career goals and how this course will help
India recently woke up to the challenge of indigenizing the aircraft industry, especially with reference to military aircraft. I believe there is immense scope here and big prospects for an aeronautical engineer to contribute to the “Make in India” program. I hope to be part of this program and work as designer/developer of aircrafts and substitution components as well as new technologies. I would like to work at DRDO but failing this, I may work in private organizations. I shall start at a junior level and then work my way up to becoming Chief Engineer. Who knows, in 10 years or so, I may even set up a manufacturing unit to help with growth of aerospace industry in India. This course will help me to get started on that road.
