Statement of Purpose for Chemical Engineering
Since the era of alchemists, chemical engineering has been attracting mankind although through its various names and forms. Chemical attracts me like nothing else and I aspire to contribute to the world by acquiring the latest knowledge from an international institute of repute.
I firmly believe that chemical engineering has a key role to play to safeguard the environment of the planet earth in various ways. I aim to develop expertise in chemical engineering with a focus on environmental engineering and do my bit to preserve the environment and improve processes that currently have a negative impact on Nature and on health. Initially I wished to contribute to the planet earth as an administrator. Then I realized that the administration also needs the right kind of scientific solutions to implement the same and I made up my mind to be at the base of the revolution by dedicating myself to chemical engineering for a greener and safer world.
I already have a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering. Pursuing the MSc in Chemical Engineering is a step up to gaining more knowledge and acquiring specific skills. My special interest is environmental engineering and since it is chemicals that cause maximum pollution, it fits in nicely with my career goal to become a specialist in this area. This program offers in-depth understanding of chemicals and processes used in chemical engineering and help me understand better impacts of such processes on the environment and measures to reduce and prevent such impacts.
Why this university and this country
Imperial College exclusively focuses on science & technology, business and medicine. Its vibrant international community is made of students from 140 countries of the world. Approximately 59% of the student community comprises of foreign students making it a truly global university. Before I finally chose this university I conducted an extensive survey of courses available in different universities. I find that this university offers the right course, making it my first choice. Besides, degrees from this university are recognised and hold value. It has a reputation for excellence and a fine faculty. As for England, I have always been fascinated by its heritage and tradition. Its etiquette impresses me and I hope some of it rubs off on me!
My experience
I spent two months in 2017 as an intern at The Carbon Black, a unit of Birla Carbon in Thailand. My task was to improve efficiency of the rotary drier. Therafter I became a working member of the Indian Council for Social Welfare, an NGO involved in women and child development, tasked with tutoring children and promoting gender equality. It was here that I also saw the impacts of environment on marginalised communities. I then became a volunteer with SOSVA in Punjab and helped drug users go into therapy, besides working on HIV relief. I then spent some time as an intern at Solvitude, as a content developer on Chemistry. Therafter I served as an intern at B-Three Edutech, working as a Chemistry subject matter expert, giving students the benefit of my knowledge and profiting the institution in the process.
Specific class/projects
Apart from internships in the past I currently am studying for a Masters in Political Science and International Relationships from IGNOU. I have done the course on Inner Engineering at the Isha Foundation. This course brought into focus holistic health and the oneness of inner being with the universe. It also helps me to have more energy and concentrate, which is vital for studies and work.
I am fond of dancing and did a course at the Shiamak Dawar dance institute.
My academic projects included one on manufacturing of glycerol and use of cellulose to remove heavy metals from ground water. These two projects made use of innovative, cost effective approaches and emphasized minimal impact on the environment.
Leadership/community service
I was cultural in charge while at school and learnt the importance of leadership and the responsibilities that go with the position. I have worked as a volunteer in two NGOs. It was not monetarily rewarding but it did give me immense satisfaction to be able to do something for children, women and drug users as well as those with HIV/AIDS. I wish I could do more and maybe, when I qualify as an environmental engineer I will bring about changes that directly and directly benefit the underprivileged people of my country.
Values I bring to the institution
I think of myself as a live-wire, a go-getter and an achiever with analytical and problem solving skills but also with a human facet to my personality. I have a humorous side to me and I took part in Comedy Shows. I love dance and theatre too, having done a course on contemporary dance and I have taken part in plays and dance competitions. I hope to do well in studies and enhance reputation of the college and I hope to liven up social life.
Career goals and how this course will help
My desire is to become a chemical engineer with focus on environment and help to change processes that will lead to drastic reduction of negative impacts on the environment. I aim to create awareness and effect policy changes that will have positive impacts at micro and macro levels. This course will endow me with global knowledge and skills to enhance my confidence and capability to tackle responsibilities and contribute to a healthier, holistic life on this planet.
