As it is I have qualified with a Bachelors in Science degree, specialising in Agriculture, topped by a post graduate diploma in Geoinformatics, my passion for plat science is natural. Plants interest and intrigue me and they hold the key to progress too. There is much to be learnt and to do and all that can be done with a deeper understanding of plant sciences, whether it is plants for food, commercial plant cropsor herbal remedies. The possibilities are immense with vast scope for research and a long road to travel. I hope and am confident this program will take me a few steps down that road. I will emerge better endowed with knowledge to help horticulturists in my country to improve yields, develop better varieties of plants and enhance productivity. Science will help them to improve not only quality and diversity but also their personal lives. I aim to bring this about.
Why Wageningen University/ Why Netherland
I visited Netherlands a few years ago and the sight of all the tulips brought back memories of The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas. I was also impressed that a country that leads in technologies with globally famous names like Philips and Stork is also quite focused on environment and horticulture. Why cannot India do the same? I feel that by obtaining specialization in plant sciences through this MSc course I will be able to do more for India’s horticulturists and the business, improving lives and the landscape.
As stated above I have visited the Netherlands once and I am hugely impressed by quality in every sphere of life. Another visible thing is that agricultural activity is carried out in a systematic and scientific way even though it contributes only a minor fraction to the country’s income and growth. This university is my first choice. It is held in high esteem as an institution of academic excellence. Its faculty is well regarded. The university offers courseware that suits my aspirations.
Experience
It has been an interesting work life so far. However, I do regret that my work did not directly involve me in horticulture. For a time I worked on Orthophoto generation and image matching and then on image filtering, image segmentation and classification. I worked on database schema for medicinal plant information using Postgre SQL. It was an interesting time when I was engaged to work on supervised image classification of satellite images of Paonta area in Himachal Pradesh.
Classes/projects
This year I am studying for my post graduation Diploma in Geoinformatics from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing. I went to ITC which is a part of University of Twente for 6 month study of Post Graduate Diploma in Geoinformatics. During my studies and on completion of Bachelors’ program I joined classes to enhance my knowledge. It was an enlightening experience to learn about sericulture, apiculture and mushroom production in a one month training program. I polished my computer skills with a course on Python, R, ML and SQL. I gained proficiency in handling spatial data with excellent skills handling Arc GIS, Q GIS, Google Earth Pro and Erdas Imagine software.
Leadership
While in school I was captain of the Kho-Kho (Indian game) team and led the team to victories in inter-school competition.
I play cricket and led my team to win medals in inter-school championships.
I spend time in community service, such as teaching less fortunate children, helping in healthcare and engaging with farmers to help them with my agriculture expertise.
What values I bring to the institute
I belong to a traditional family with time honored values. I hope to share these with students from other cultures. It is in me to work hard with full commitment and I aim to do just that when I join this course. My good academic performance should reflect well on the university. I play cricket and may get to play on the university women’s team and bring honour. I bring with me a bit of Indian values and promise to do my best for the university.
Career goals and how this course will help
As stated above I need to become an expert in plant sciences to help my country’s farmers do better and this course will help me to fulfil this objective.
