Statement of Purpose (SOP) example for Data Science in USA
Progress and innovation is being spearheaded by the digital revolution, wherein every sector is shifting towards digital and IT processes. Economies are becoming largely data-intensive or data-driven, hence raising the demand for professionals in the field of Data Science everywhere. I have always shared an interest and developed a passionate attitude towards the field of Data Science, since I started getting introduced to such technologies, computers and so on. The advent of such disciplines have truly revolutionized the world, and witnessing such changes/developments right in front of my eyes, made me realize that I too wanted to pursue and establish a career in such fields. I completed courses and indulged in several professional ventures, all of which have significantly honed my knowledge-base and skill-set required to excel in the discipline of Data Science. For better clearance, I have elaborated everything underneath.
Pursuing higher studies in the aforementioned discipline would be an exciting and challenging venture. I shall firstly specify my academic background, after which I shall express my reasons for traveling to the USA for pursuing higher studies, and finally enlist every detail about my professional ventures, project-based experiences, internships and basically everything that well-equips me to pursue a career in the field of Data Science.
I passed my matriculation exam from ……….. in …….. with a score of ….. GPA. I passed my intermediate exam in …… from ………… with a score of …… marks out of ….. My background/stream here was science, with the 3 major subjects …………………… I went on to complete my graduation in the department of Civil Engineering, from ………………………………………………….in ……… with an overall score of ……….. CGPA. I further went on to pursue various diploma courses and completed projects that align well with the discipline of Data Science. But, before moving on to such details, let me briefly express my reasons for traveling to the USA.
The USA is the foremost place to pursue higher studies in such disciplines because it is the torch bearer of domains such as Data Science, IoT, IT, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and so on. Students would be able to learn from field-based studies at sites, like Silicon Valley, offices of Google, Microsoft and profoundly learn about the discipline with utmost depth and understanding. The legacy of digital expansion is unique for the USA, as compared to other countries, because globally recognized tech giants have emerged from the country, starting from Apple to IBM, Meta and more. The country also holds an undisputed reputation in providing world-class education facilities.
This university is one such example, wherein students are provided with every facility that suffices their holistic academic requirement. The course structure is well-oriented to fulfill every theoretical and practical aspect pertaining towards the course. Moreover, I have learnt about the expertise of the faculty from the alumni, who had shared great reviews/feedback. Such factors have led me to confirm my decision to travel and pursue higher studies in Data Science from the USA.
I have completed five diploma courses and have been certified for the same as well, all of which inclines well with the discipline of Data Science. The courses are as follows. The first one was a 1-month course in Data Science with Python fromBrainovisionPvt Ltd. The second one was in Java & Data structures, Algorithms from Geeksforgeeks. The third one was also a 1-month course in Aws&Devops, from BrainovisionPvt Ltd. The fourth one was in SQL (Structured Query Language) from Udemy. The final and fifth one was in Data Visualization Tools, from Tableau & Excel. I have completed 3 projects, wherein my practical skills in performing real-world tasks in Data Science were put to test. The following indulgences effectively honed my knowledge-base and skill-set required for the aforementioned discipline. The first one was entitled The Rubik’s Cube Solver. Here we developed an image processing software that we worked on using traditional image processing techniques, in order to segment square grids and classify colors using a multiclass logistic regression. The Kociemba Algorithm was chosen for solving the cube, which basically uses a 2-phase approach to solve the cube in an optimal way.
My second one was a Data Analytics Project, entitled E-Commerce Sales Analysis with Tableau. Here, we used to maintain or create a market-wise customer acquisition record per month, and also created an interactive dashboard using all the available data-sheets. The third project was on the development of Dynamic Time Slot Allocations at Traffic Signals. My goal was basically to create a real-time application that can analyze the level of traffic congestion and dynamically allocate time intervals for traffic signals. The objective was accomplished by implementing YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once), a computer vision algorithm. My final project was on Business Analysis (Finance Accounting). I prepared a market analysis using Michael E. Porter’s five competitive forces model, cost leadership, competitive analysis, comparative analysis, differentiation and a product portfolio matrix. I further used this analysis structure and conducted research between three corporate companies to know about their profit-margins and losses.
I completed an internship during my 3rd year in college (second semester), in Bolt, an IoT company based in Bangalore, for six months as their Business Development executive. I was well-acquainted with the usage of tools like SQL, Python and Tableau. I used to work on SQL for data analysis by writing queries and applying a few filters to extract the required insights from available data-sets. I also used to work on generating reports for various departments. In tableau, I have worked for data visualization to present the company’s previous or last month’s data-sets, through the representation of graphs/charts and also used to do complete presentations on profits and losses, regarding products that the company was manufacturing. My time here further added to my set of skills, thus equipping me well to pursue higher education in the aforementioned discipline.
I have also developed significant leadership and community skills from varied experiences. During my graduation period, I worked as the head of DOSM — Department of sponsorship and marketing during my 1st year (second semester to be precise) to conduct our college-fest called Arena. I also worked as the head of DOC- Department of Controls, whose responsibility was to invite/bring celebrities and entrepreneurs to the college’s fests/events. I participated in this role during my third semester. I also participated/played in sports-games like cricket and basketball during college, thus honing my athletic skills as well. I used to participate in clubs like coding clubs, hackathons, and so on. I share an interest in visual arts like drawing and graphic designing too.
Such indulgences have truly boosted my sense of self with greater moralities, inclusive social values, heightened managerial skills and a sharper-critical intellect. I have also started acknowledging the essence and importance of community-building, brotherhood (unity) and inclusion, all of which is necessary for the prosperity of a nation, success of organizations and harmonious functioning of society. I also value the power of knowledge, wherein I believe it is always necessary to keep exploring, studying new concepts, accepting change and welcoming the innovative aspects of modernity.
India is well on its way to becoming an IT giant in the global village. The shift towards a data-intensive economy has significantly heightened the demand for professionals in the field. My career goal is, therefore, to establish myself in this very field, and contribute towards the wheel of progress with new ideas and designs that are able to address the prevailing issues of today’s world. One amongst such issues is the degrading aspect of our ecology, which I believe the digital revolution can fix to a certain and productive extent.
